The Cheetahs will be travelling across the South China Sea into the northwestern tip of the island of Borneo, when they faced Brunei DPMM at the Wasps’ nest.
The Cheetahs will have a high confidence into this match. With Amin Nasir at the helm, the Cheetahs have seven points in their last four games, and had two moral boosting friendly games against Tampines Rovers (2-2) and Woodlands Wellington (2-0) during the league break.
The Cheetahs will be looking to take this game in their own hands, especially with DPMM languishing with just a point advantage just above them. The Wasps had a disasterous season so far, dropping from their second placing from last season and now just languishing right above their danger zone. With their troubles of foreign players who came with great promises from promising footballing backgrounds, almost all but Tales Dos Santos, were sent packing off to their homelands after being deemed surplus by the coaches.
For the Cheetahs, it has been a topsy turvy season all round after having bad patches, then having a purple patch in May, and then having another bad patch, it looks like the season will be ending on a positive note for them.
The partnership of Igor Cerina and Syaqir Sulaiman have been rock solid eversince the last Harimau Muda game in August. Since then they have only conceded just two goals in three games. With the ever reliable Fadhil Salim, who had been rewarded with a call-up to Bernd Stange’s Lions team since 2007, the Cheetahs would be looking forward to get out of the dreaded bottom two positions.
The only problem since early this season has been scoring goals. Apart from Mamadou Diallo, who have racked in seven goals this term, the rest of the strikers have been struggling for goals this season. A dreaded feeling of losing Jordan Webb to Home United may have been long diminished, however, with Azhar Sairudin and Fairoz Hasan hitting form at the same time, and Nurhilmi Jasni having the form of his life this season, the Cheetahs will be looking to take every game in stride and rack in more goals for them to push up to the table.
The Cheetahs had never lost to the Wasps this season, having drawn 3-3 back in March and one of their best performance in purple, a 2-1 win in Hougang in May. Will the Cheetahs pick up the points in Brunei this Saturday??
P.S: The boys will be flying off to Brunei at noon on Friday, departing via Terminal 2 on flight BI 422 (Royal Brunei airlines). They will be returning to Singapore on Sunday on flight BI 421 at 11.20 am.
