Hougang United suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat against Tanjong Pagar United at Jurong East Stadium on Friday evening, despite a spirited second-half response and several opportunities to take something from the contest.
After a goalless first half in which the Cheetahs created promising chances and saw a penalty go unconverted, the hosts struck twice shortly after the interval.
Washington Jaramillo pulled a goal back for Hougang midway through the second half, but the Cheetahs were unable to find an equaliser despite pushing until the final whistle.
FIRST-HALF OPPORTUNITIES
Tanjong Pagar began the match with a spell of possession and created an early opportunity when a cross from the right found Masahiro Sugita, who was unable to convert.
Hougang gradually grew into the contest and came close to opening the scoring twice in quick succession.
Oakley Cannonier was first to threaten, sending an effort narrowly wide after meeting a low delivery from Ayman Kassimi.
Moments later, Kassimi went even closer with a powerful effort from distance that struck the crossbar.
The Cheetahs were then presented with an opportunity to take the lead midway through the half.
Following a promising attacking move involving Kassimi and Cannonier, the latter went down inside the penalty area. A VAR review resulted in a penalty being awarded to Hougang, but Lucas Cardoso was unable to convert from the spot.
Hougang continued looking for openings, with Cannonier later delivering a dangerous ball across the penalty area that was intercepted before reaching Jordan Emaviwe.
Kassimi remained a threat down the right, helping the Cheetahs win two corners during first-half stoppage time.
Neither side was able to break the deadlock, and the teams entered the interval level at 0-0.
HOSTS STRIKE AFTER THE BREAK
Hougang returned for the second half looking to build on their attacking moments before the interval.
However, it was Tanjong Pagar who opened the scoring shortly after the restart.
A cross from the right was met by Riku Fukashiro, who headed home to give the Jaguars the lead.
The hosts doubled their advantage a few minutes later when Alejandro Martín Masogo found the back of the net from inside the penalty area.
The goal was reviewed by VAR following an incident involving Mahamé Siby, but the decision stood.
With the Cheetahs trailing 2-0, the challenge was to find a way back into the contest.
JARAMILLO GIVES HOUGANG HOPE
Hougang responded midway through the second half through Washington Jaramillo.
Lucas Cardoso delivered a corner into the penalty area, where Jaramillo rose to meet the ball and headed home to reduce the deficit to 2-1.
The goal gave the Cheetahs renewed belief as they pushed forward in search of an equaliser.
Arya Igami was introduced shortly afterwards, replacing Jaramillo as Akbar Nawas' side looked to maintain the momentum.
Tanjong Pagar thought they had restored their two-goal advantage later in the half, but the effort was ruled out following a VAR review, with a foul on Miloš Drinčić identified in the build-up.
That decision kept Hougang within one goal heading into the closing stages.
LATE PUSH FALLS SHORT
The Cheetahs continued to press for an equaliser as the match entered its final minutes.
Jordan Vestering was introduced in place of Amir Syafiz, while Hougang committed players forward in search of another goal.
One of the clearest chances of the evening fell to Arya Igami after Cardoso delivered a cross towards the far post.
Igami met the ball, but his effort struck the woodwork.
The Japanese attacker had another opportunity shortly afterwards following a promising individual move, although he was unable to find the target.
Hougang continued searching for a breakthrough during four minutes of additional time.
A late delivery from Saifullah Akbar found Connor Flynn-Gillespie, but the striker's header went over the crossbar.
Despite the team's efforts, the final whistle confirmed a 2-1 victory for Tanjong Pagar United.
FOCUS TURNS TO THE NEXT CHALLENGE
It was another frustrating result for the Cheetahs, who created opportunities throughout the evening but were unable to turn them into points.
The first-half chances, Jaramillo's goal and the determination shown during the closing stages offered positives to take forward as the team continues working towards its first league victory of the season.
Hougang will now turn their attention to the next Singapore Premier League fixture against Geylang International at Our Tampines Hub on Monday, 26 October.
