Hougang United Football Club (HGFC) is pleased to announce that Clement Teo has been appointed as Head Coach of the Singapore Premier League (SPL) squad for the 2019 season.
The club is also pleased to announce that former Singapore International Salim Moin has been appointed Assistant Head Coach.
Initially appointed as Team Manager and Assistant Coach, Clement Teo faced an uphill task last season when he took over as Caretaker Head Coach in July 2017 after the SPL’s team’s dismal start of 3 draws and 7 losses from the first ten matches.
His appointment seemed to inject a new lease of life as the Cheetahs won for the first time at the 11th attempt against Balestier Khalsa.
HGFC went on to finish the season with just one more victory against Geylang International, but the much-improved performances in the latter part of the season (which included stemming SPL champions Albirex Niigata’s 38-game winning run at their Jurong East den) clearly proved that our Cheetahs were more capable than what our final position showed.
Despite last year’s dismal finish, the Management Committee is confident that Clement Teo’s appointment will foster continuity and a refreshed determination of the team to excel beyond all expectations.
Clement is not new to the local football fraternity. From as early as mid-90s, Clement started his coaching career with St Gabriel’s School (SGS), a stint which stretched over a span of close to a decade.
His good work and achievements at SGS did not go unnoticed, and he was soon appointed Head Coach by Catholic Junior College.
After obtaining his Coaching ‘A’ License, Clement made his first foray into the Singapore professional league with Woodlands Wellington as Assistant Coach of the Rams. He went on to be Team Manager of Tampines Rovers before joining Hougang United in 2016.
Despite his strict no-nonsense approach towards training and discipline, Clement Teo’s professionalism and strong desire to win have earned the respect of both players and staff alike. This is evident in the close bonding and camaraderie observed both in the dressing room and on the field since he took charge.
With a very seasoned coach at the helm, the club is excitedly looking forward to the new year ahead.
The club is in the midst of finalizing our team line-up and details will be announced soon.
Our home matches for the new season will be played at the Jalan Besar Stadium and our supporters’ presence on matchday will be crucial to our team’s success.
Despite this change in venue, we know that the boisterous and exuberant atmosphere created by our fans will be our 12th and most important “player” regardless of where we play.
We therefore look forward to your unwavering support.
On behalf of the committee, staff and players of the club, we wish each and every one of you a Happy New Year! May peace, good health, and many good things will continue to come your way in 2019!
