Cheetahs slay Protectors in Northeastern Derby

Kwon Daekyung O.G 9′, Geison Moura 58′, Diego Gama 70′

Fazrul Nawaz 4′

The second part of the North-Eastern Derby concluded on Friday evening, as the Cheetahs continued their giant-slaying act, this time defeating Home United 3-1.

The result have now established the Cheetahs as the most in-form team of the moment with fourteen points from the last six games.

The Cheetahs moved up to fifth, two points above Albirex, as they continue to surprise neutrals with their no-nonsense approach on the pitch.

Things were not so rosy in the first five minutes of the derby as the Cheetahs were constantly misplacing passes and constantly being packed to their own half. Centre half Wahyudi Wahid headed towards his own goal and with Fadhil Salim caught in no-man’s land, former Singapore international Fazrul Nawaz tapped into an empty net to give the Protectors a goal.

However, the lead lasted only five minutes, as Kwon Daekyung headed into his own net, after Azhar Sairudin’s cross caused confusion into Home’s defence.

There were otherwise few chances for either side in the first half. Fazrul Nawaz had a shot in the penalty box denied by Fadhil Salim while Sirina Camara’s volley from a corner was cleared on the line by Wahyudi Wahid.

The Cheetahs’ best chance to take the lead fell to Geison Moura. A good run from Nurhilmi Jasni on the left was punched away by Shahri Jantan right towards the path of Geison Moura, who could only manage to hit the ball into the side-netting.

In the second half, the four-pronged attack of Diego Gama, Geison Moura, Azhar Sairudin, and Nurhilmi Jasni caused numerous headaches for Home United’s backline.

The Cheetahs took the lead in the 57th minute. Azhar Sairudin exchanged a one-two pass with Shunsuke Nakatake before chipping the ball above the Protectors’ defence. Geison Moura slotted the ball into goal.

The Cheetahs then extended their lead on the 70th minute. Azhar Sairudin again led the attack from the middle, passing the ball into the path of Geison Moura. The Brazilian found his compatriot unmarked on the right and Diego Gama slammed the ball home past Shahril Jantan to give the Cheetahs a two goal cushion.

Home United’s Sirina Camara was sent off in injury time, after a second booking, when referee Jansen Foo adjudged the French player for simulation.

The Cheetahs will next meet Tampines Rovers at Clementi Stadium on 19th June.
